Twitter & Pownce & the Headless Plurk!

First of all, I have loved Twitter for various reasons:

1. My “springboard” for learning. I follow many educational and tech people. They send out great links (usually), and I learn from there.

2. My network. I’ve just started to connect with people that I’ve NEVER MET! Maybe that is why they still talk to me!?!?! Quiet @clarkeee!

3. Back to my network, I look really am looking forward to NECC. I hope to meet F2F all of these great connections, and build on our relationship….IF they talk/tweet to me afterwards.

4. It’s simple. I can sit there and just gain information, or I can type in comments about the family & dog, new tech websites, or promote this blog.

However, the lack of consistency lately is troubling! I know Twitter received a huge grant and I thought with the “upgrades” (maybe they haven’t come through yet) it would be much more consistent.

ENTER: PLURK AND POWNCE!

First, PLURK In Beta, I got an invite from Alec Courosa. Couldn’t get by the headless animal on the front page, so it took me awhile to go back and sign in. Using it now and it is the big buzzword with my network. You earn Karma points to upgrade and the “tweets” are on a timeline. I still think it flows the wrong way! POWNCE

I’ve been signed up for POWNCE for a longer time, but have not used it that much. Again I needed an invite to get in. Pictures below again thanks to The Jing Project:

I’ve been trying to figure out the same thing – how do I decide which networks are worth pursuing and which aren’t. The mob mentality is a big factor for me – where are the largest numbers of EdTech people hanging out? Right now, Twitter seems to be the hands-down winner, but lately Plurk has been picking up steam. The next factor is reliability and features – Twitter has been floundering lately, but I’d guess that as more people flock to Plurk, it will begin to suffer some of the same problems.

I wondered if summer would lead teachers to tune out of the social network scene, but it seems the opposite is true. More teachers are using twitter and other tools to start communicating. In fact, 6 of the teachers from my school just took the plunge and began twittering after our summer institute!

It also has me thinking about how teachers will respond to blocked networks and denied access at school now that the genie is out of the bottle, which was the post of my last blog entry at http://milobo.edublogs.org
